What to watch: The Departed
“I don’t want to be a product of my environment, I want the environment to be a product of me”The phrase from the beginning of the movie. Good enough to keep my attention for two and a half hours.
Irish mafia, undercover cops, undercover bad guys pretending to work for the police, lots of action, two “rats” loving the same woman; the story is good, the movie is good. Some twists in the plot and quite a decent amount of violence. And I shall not forget the great actors playing in this movie: Jack Nicholson, as the boss, Matt Damon- the confident and arrogant cop and a brilliant Leonardo DiCaprio. I have started to get used with his girlie attitude, or as a extreme tough guy, but he really hits the spot with his role.
Worth to remember is Frank Costello, their “daddy”, the boss of Irish mafia, he was far away from youth. Actually he was now 70, filthy rich, he was respected by everyone, but he had no intention of quitting. Even if he was taking useless risks, while he could easily have been on a remote sunny island, he was still going on. This fact is even emphasize be himself in the movie and it made me ask myself some general questions about career taking over one’s life and actually defying us as persons.
At the end I can only say The Departed is a very good film, worth watching, but it is not on the same level as the mafia classics. I think I’ve sensed few minutes of A Bronx Tale atmosphere, but it was just a prelude.
